Starting and Ending Well

King Asa

“Asa did what was good and right in the eyes
of the Lord his God.” 2 Chronicles 14:2

“In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was
afflicted with a disease in his feet. Though his
disease was severe, even in his illness he did
not seek help from the Lord, but only from
the physicians.” 2 Chronicles 16: 12

King Jehoshaphat

“(Jehoshaphat) walked in the ways of his
father Asa and did not stray from them;
he did what was right in the eyes of the
Lord.” 2 Chronicles 20:32

“Later, Jehoshaphat king of Judah made
an alliance with Ahaziah king of Israel,
who was guilty of wickedness.”
2 Chronicles 20:35

Uzziah King of Judah

“ He did what was right in the eyes of
the Lord, just as his father Amaziah had
done. He sought God during the days of
Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear
of God. As long as he sought the Lord,
God gave him success.” 2 Chron. 26: 4-5

“But after Uzziah became powerful, his
pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful
to the Lord his God, and entered the temple
of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of
incense….King Uzziah had leprosy until
the day he died.” 2 Chron. 26: 16, 21

King Hezekiah

“He did what was right in the eyes of the
Lord, just as his father David had done.”
2 Chron. 29: 2

“Hezekiah trusted in the Lord, the God
of Israel. There was no one like him among
all the kings of Judah, either before him or
after him. He held fast to the Lord and
did not cease to follow him; he kept the
commands the Lord had given Moses.
And the Lord was with him; he was
successful in whatever he undertook…”
2 Kings 18: 5-7a

“In those days Hezekiah became ill and
was at the point of death. He prayed to
the Lord, who answered him and gave him
a miraculous sign. But Hezekiah’s heart was
proud and he did not respond to the kindness
shown him; therefore the Lord’s wrath was
on him and on Judah and Jerusalem. Then
Hezekiah repented of the pride of his
heart, as did the people of Jerusalem;
therefore the Lord’s wrath did not
come upon them during the days of
Hezekiah.
” 2 Chron. 32: 24 – 26

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes! I’ve been reading 2 Chronicles
for my daily devotion. Haha.. After
reading about so many kings, I
recognized that it’s not easy to start
well and end well. Don’t you think so?
Just look at the lives of the kings
mentioned above. We’re talking about
kings after David and Solomon,
though they’re not exactly perfect either.
I selected these 4 kings because
they’re the rare few who started well.
They “did what was right in the
eyes of the Lord their God”.
Of course, there are other good kings
too. But let’s just stick to these 4 first ok?
Then the bible narrates how well
each king did. They destroyed altars
built for idolatry, followed God’s laws,
and so on. I’m sure many of us know
some of their famous stories, especially
about how Jehoshaphat won the battle
by sending the musicians to the frontline.
Hezekiah was famous because God
extended his life by fifteen years.
You can read that from 2 Kings.
Wow! Amazing men of God. Great kings!
However, these great kings were not
exempted from making wrong decisions
and having pride in their hearts too.
We are all vulnerable. Hezekiah repented
and God spared. Can we safely say
that Hezekiah ended well? Hmmm….
I want to start well and end well too.
I’ve started….. now, I want to end
it well. This morning, it just dawned
upon me that my life story could be
as short as these kings in the bible.
My life story could jolly well be a
chapter written in God’s record book!
Then, I really would want it to be
written like this, “Aggie did what
was right in the eyes of the Lord her God.”
My constant prayer is, “God, make
me Your humble servant. I want to
be a blessing to whoever You place
in my life, wherever I go. And if there
be any pride within me, please reveal
it so that I can repent of it and
continue to move on. Amen.”
